Coconut Oil & Molasses Pre-poo Recipe for Maintaining Moisture in Your Hair

I discussed how to keep hair moisturised in 7 Ways to Keep Your Hair Moisturised and one of the ways I recommended is using a pre-poo prior to shampooing your hair.

This recipe is excellent for protecting your hair so everything you do afterwards will have a limited effect when it comes to stripping your hair.

You will need coconut oil and molasses. Coconut oil can replace the natural oils in your hair and also reduce protein loss during washing.

Additionally, it prevents moisture from escaping from the hair.

Grandma’s Unsulphured Molasses, on the other hand, revitalises hair and helps to restore hair colour. Together, they deliver a potent concoction.

I purchase the 100% coconut oil from the food section, not the one in the hair products section as this contains unsuitable products like petrolatum and mineral oil.

You can find Grandma’s molasses in the baking section of most supermarkets.

You can also order unsulphured molasses from iherb.com. Since the last time I wrote this article, I’ve changed to using Jarrow Formulas Original Coconut Oil for this recipe.

DIY Pre-poo Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of molasses
  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil

Directions

  • Pour the coconut oil into a clean bowl and add the molasses
  • Place the bowl in a bigger bowl of hot water and heat up the mix
  • Apply to your hair and scalp, massage in and cover with a disposable cap
  • Leave on for 1 hour then wash out with a mild shampoo.
  • Condition and style as usual.

You can adjust the recipe based on the length of your hair. Over time, this recipe will aid in moisture retention and reducing frizz and dry hair.

Keep in mind; in order for this to work, you need to aid the method with other things such as eliminating products with sulfates and other drying and stripping ingredients from your hair regimen.
