Dye Grey Hair Naturally with these 2 Damage Free Methods, Part 2 – Henna Powder & Indigo

Henna powder and indigo powder is the second way to dye your hair without causing any damage.

In part 1 of this article, I covered dyeing grey hair with Henna and Mustard Seed Oil. This article will address using henna powder and indigo to dye hair.

This method is very safe and lasts for up to 4 months without any need for a touch-up. I dye my hair with henna and indigo every 8 – 10 weeks and have had excellent results each time.

How to Dye Grey Hair With Henna and Indigo

Ingredients

  • 1 packet of henna powder. This is usually sold in 100 gm packets
  • 1 bottle of lemon juice. You can use fresh lemons but you’ll be squeezing for quite some time. The bottled ones from the grocery store work just as well.
  • 1 packet of indigo powder. This is usually sold in 100 gm packets too.

1 packet is shoulder-length hair and shorter. For longer hair, you will need 1.5 to 2 packets each depending on length.

How To Apply Henna to Hair

Step 1

Empty the henna powder into a bowl and mix with enough lemon juice to form a mashed potato consistency then cover with cling film.

Set aside in a cool location for 2 days before your treatment. This process releases the dye from the henna.

Step 2

When you’re ready to use the henna paste, add in more lemon juice and keep mixing until it’s as smooth and runny as yogurt.

Some people also add various kinds of tea or coffee into the henna but I found this reduced the effectiveness of the dye.

Apply to your scalp and hair generously. Slather it on like you’re rolling around in the mud.

Afterward, wrap cling film around your head then leave on for up to 5 hours. You can leave overnight as well. The longer, the better.

Rinse out afterward with cool water then wash the rest out with a cheap conditioner. This requires several rinses and can be a tad annoying.

When you have all the henna out, it’s time to mix the indigo powder. 1 – 1.5 packets should suffice depending on the length of your hair.

How to Apply Indigo to Hair

Step 1

Mix the indigo with water until it’s smooth then apply to your hair immediately.

Cover with clingfilm and leave on for 1 – 3 hours. There is no need to pre-mix indigo. It’s mixed when you’re ready to apply.

Step 2

Wash out with lukewarm water then deep condition with heat afterward. You can use a 2-in-1 tabletop hair steamer like this one.

The indigo over henna will leave your hair a deep blue-black color. You don’t have to use indigo as the henna works fine on its own.

You can also mix equal parts of henna and indigo or more henna with a little indigo for different shades of brown to auburn.

Do not use indigo alone. You will end up with bright blue hair.

My favorite brand of henna is Nupur Henna, which you can find in most supermarkets. You can also buy henna online at the following locations:-

If you’re new to henna and indigo, you will find this messy and it might take forever.

However, as you practice more, you will eventually learn to manage the amount of time you spend on it and fine-tune your process.
